Around here the summer is short enough that the back garden earns its keep in about four months. A patio is what turns those months into somewhere you sit rather than somewhere you look at, and unlike almost everything else you can buy for a house, it needs nothing from you afterwards.

What you get

  • A slab sized around your table and chairs, not around a number.
  • The finish you chose - broom, exposed aggregate, colour or stamped - with the cost of each one laid next to the others first.
  • Connecting paths, tying the gate, the back door and the drive together.
  • Steps down where the garden sits below the level of the house.
  • More slab, where the patio you already have was always a little tight.

How it works

1. Show us the space

A minute on the form. A couple of photographs tell us more than measurements do, and a rough sketch is fine.

2. We chalk it out and price it

The shape gets marked where it will actually go, drainage is settled there and then, and an itemised figure is left with you.

3. Pour day

Subgrade prepared, edges formed, concrete placed, then the finish you picked and the joint layout cut in. The garden gets swept before we go.

Why homeowners here call us

  • You decide the size standing in it. One outline marked on the grass ends the argument faster than any drawing has ever managed.
  • Any paperwork is ours. Garden slabs usually need very little, but if an application or an inspection is required, both are our job rather than yours.
  • We pour flatwork and nothing else. Say early if a structure is coming later, because it changes how the slab gets set out.

What a patio week looks like

Nobody tells you this part, and it is generally what people actually want to know before committing a garden to it.

StageWhat is happening
Marking outAt the estimate, on your grass
Digging and baseTurf and soil out, stone in and compacted
FormingEdges set to the line and the falls
Pour dayPlaced and finished inside the day
Joints cutSoon after, to the layout agreed
Using itDates we hand you before we start

Your garden is a working site through the middle of that. A gate stays open, a route across the lawn takes a beating and gets made good afterwards, and a truck wants somewhere to stand. Settling where all of that can and cannot go at the estimate beats discovering it on the morning.

Four lines to hold any bid against

Antioch publishes a slab specification rather than leaving it to whoever happens to be pouring, and that hands you something solid to measure a quote by.

ItemSpecified
SlabFour inches minimum
BaseCompacted CA-6, four inches
MixSix bag
AirThree to six percent

Ask for all four on the paperwork, of us and of everybody else you have out. A quote naming them has been priced against them. One that does not may be perfectly sound, but you have no way of telling, and every item on that list is invisible by the time the job is finished. What each is protecting against is set out in the Antioch patio spec, line by line.

Where we work

Out from Antioch through Lindenhurst and Lake Villa, west to Fox Lake, up to Spring Grove, and east to Old Mill Creek and Winthrop Harbor. Garden work turns far less on which village you are in than a drive does, but ground conditions near the lakes vary street by street, which is the reason we come and look at it.

Ours are worked through properly here:

Drive needing doing as well? We quote concrete driveway work on the same trip.
